PROJECT AT A GLANCE
Product: Eclipse 39 panels
Customer: Western Power Distribution
Location: Birmingham, UK
Installation: 2016 - 17
With population growth predicted at over 12% between 2012 and 2032, the fact that Birmingham is enjoying a post-recession renaissance with their The Big City Plan, and the construction of the high speed rail link - HS2, the need to increase the security of supply to the UK’s second city has never been higher.
A new 132/11kV primary substation will boost supplies to around 41,000 homes and business, improving the network reliability and help to meet the increasing demand to connect additional embedded generation and load onto the 11kV network with an additional 60MVA of capacity in the city.
As part of the project, 72 panels of aging 11kV switchgear will be decommissioned, and replaced (all without any disruption of supplies) with two new 11kV switchboards, of which 39 panels are Eclipse.
Working in partnership with Birmingham City Council and Western Power Distribution (WPD), the team faced a number of major challenges along the way, all of which were successfully met - from a giant sinkhole, to having to physically pull all of the cabling up the 25 metre vertical risers by hand due to the switchboard being located on the third floor of the substation (which was no easy feat!).
Hawker Siddeley Switchgear continue to be one of WPD’s first choice MV switchgear solution providers, building on our successful long-standing relationship that we have enjoyed over the last 15 years.
