Network Rail - Sussex Route CP5 Upgrade

31/05/2016

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

Product: Lightning NDC
Customer: Network Rail
Location: Sussex
Installation: Control Period 5

The Sussex Route is a ‘spine and rib’ Route with the Brighton Main Line covering 700 miles of track. The route is the busiest and most densely congested of the whole network with an average of 10 trains per route-mile at any time of day.

The Sussex Route is one of the main commuter routes in the south of England, carrying approximately 51,000 people each morning into the Central London employment zone from key commuter towns such as Brighton, Horsham, East Grinstead and stations in-between. Passenger growth has been 40 per cent in the last 10 years and is predicted to grow by a further 30 per cent in the next 10 years.

THE CHALLENGE

With this volume of passengers it is vital that the switchgear used for the upgrade needs to be safe, reliable and low maintenance.

The DC power supply was last upgraded in 2011 but operates below an N-1 capability. The CP5 investment will be focused on DC switchgear renewal and electric traction equipment in order to meet N-1 capability.

THE SOLUTION

The relationship and framework between Network Rail and  Hawker Siddeley Switchgear (HSS) means that Network Rail already know the benefits of using the Lightning NDC.

HSS are now able supply 12 sites along the Sussex Route with a total of 60 Lightning NDC panels, providing Network Rail with the vital safe, reliable and low-maintenance solution that they need.
